An inspiring real life story about my own financial freedom as a new entrepreneur

In the early days of my business, money felt scarce. Every two weeks as bills became due, I felt immense fear and would ask myself: “Can I pay my bills? Did I earn enough revenue?” I loved working for myself, yet financially surviving felt super scary at times. It got really scary when a client who had paid me a significant fee in advance decided he wanted to postpone our work due to a change in his life plans. As was appropriate, he asked for his money back minus any of my already expended fees. I panicked. I didn’t have the money. I had spent it as soon as I received it.

I knew my only option here was to turn to faith. I sat in my altar space at home and prayed. A fear-filled part of me began rationalizing various ideas for how to avoid giving a refund. I reasoned I could tell the client I didn’t think it was right for him to back out. I thought about alternative ways to work together to use up that same amount of money. I hated all of these thoughts. They did not feel right to me. I wanted to do the right thing and fully honor his request and refund his money. I believed the decision he made was right for him. But, I didn’t have the money to give him.

A few days later, I checked my building’s mailroom, which I actually didn’t do all that often. It was Christmas time and so I sensed some cards might come in for me. I did receive a few cards, including one from a family elder I had not seen in many years and we had recently reconnected. When I had sat down with her catching up about my life and work, this relative was impressed by the work I was doing to help people as a coach. She felt it was aligned with my mother’s legacy and we talked about how pleased my mom would be with my choices. From this same relative, inside her Christmas card to me was also a check and a note: “I hope this helps as you follow your dreams.” That check was for the exact dollar amount I needed to refund my client. I wept. This was a sure sign that a force greater than me — God or the universe — was supporting the good work I was doing. I won’t say I never worried about money again, but I can say this story always reminds me that I don’t have to.

The starting point: a spiritual principle to reset your money consciousness

Your financial fear is understandable. It comes from the mainstream consiousness around money taught inside conventional education and corporate settings. Your financial fear also may originate from the leading mindset inside your own family. From these places you learned a limiting mindset about money. While your beliefs about lack of access to money may feel absolutely true to you at this moment, this blog is meant to literally blow your mind ... and get you back into your heart + the Truth about how money works from a spiritual perspective when you follow your higher calling.

The exciting news is that there are an abundance of spiritual principles you can learn to help you understand how to generate money as an entrepreneur rather than depending on an employer. And if you read further on in this blog you're going to learn several resources I recommend to help you study and truly gain the wealth of knowledge you need to empower yourself as an entrepreneur. But for now, let's start with the most essential spiritual principle there is that relates to you and money:

God (the universe) always provides.

This spiritual principle is found in all wisdom traditions and reminds you to trust that God (the universe) always anticipates and provides for your needs; and it is simply up to you to be open to believe and receive. To embrace this spiritual Truth can be harder than it sounds. Living this principle requires you to cleanse out the lower consciousness mainstream thinking that your boss, your company, or a health insurance company is the source of your financial security. And then, you must embrace and embody the higher consciousness thinking that God provides for you THROUGH the individuals or companies that give you money. In other words, God is always the source. Those who pay you or provide other key resources are vessels of God to meet your needs.

Take a moment and think about this: whenever you had a real financial need, hasn't a way always become possible to meet it? That is God (the universe) at work on your behalf. As you shift your thinking toward this spiritual idea, you will notice that you feel more and more secure in your faith in God’s endless ability to provide for you. And, you'll notice that you magically begin to cultivate and attract money to you to support your career dreams and all of your other needs.

My top 5 resources to cultivate financial freedom, by women for women

To generate money for and from your dream business takes effort first to cleanse and release conventional thinking about money, which is based in fear and scarcity; and second to learn and embody higher spiritual wisdom about money, which is based in faith and abundance. To do this work puts you in good company. When you study highly successful entrepreneurs, it is common to learn that they put time and energy into shifting their money mindset. To start your study of spiritual wisdom to cultivate an abundant money mindset, here are my top 5 resources that I've personally used and that I recommend to clients:

This is a great book to open your intellectual understanding of how spirituality and money are interconnected. Marianne Williamson speaks from both her deep study of spirituality and also her own experience in creating businesses focused on spreading good in the world. This book is filled with simple principles and memorable stories and is ideal for easy listening and learning on Audible.

This book breaks open your toxic myths about money and offers real solutions to relieve yourself from scarcity consciousness. The author Lynne Twist made her career as a global fundraiser to end poverty and from this work she shares her expansive views on mony and how it's not so much lack of money that is the problem, it is our toxic thinking about money that plagues both the poor and the wealthy. Ultimately, Lynn offers the theory that if we all focus on "sufficiency" rather than extreme excess or extreme scarcity, we all win.

3. Book: Open Your Mind to Prosperity by Catherine Ponder

This book provides great tactical advice to begin using spiritual principles and practices to transform your money mindset and results. Catherine Ponder provides dozens of affirmations to help shift your consciousness around money, directs you how to create your dream career vision and a vision board, and provides advanced level spiritual principles you can use to amp up your money game like tithing. Going into this book, you want to know that this author often references Jesus and Christ Consciousness. If this does not resonate with you, you can easily shift the language to what suits you and still effectively work with her material.

4. Book: Be. A No-Bullshit Guide to Increasing Your Self Worth and Net Worth by Simply Being Yourself by Jessica Zweig. This breakthrough book for women is a giant permission slip to be your most authentic self as a way to generate revenue. Author Jessica Zweig (my long-time client!) shares her own rags to riches story about how she first developed her self worth, and upon that foundation she elevated her net worth and grew her company to a 7-figure business. In addition to her own inspiring story, Jessica shares her feminine genius in business and marketing throughout the book. This book is an ideal read once you know your desired career or business path to which you can then apply Jessica's proven and trademarked tools to take your true self and turn it ito a profitable brand, just as she has done. (Released in Feb 2021 and named #1 new release and #1 for women + business on Amazon!)

5. App: The Secret to Money by Rhonda Byrne

This app comes from Rhonda Byrne, author of the book and film The Secret, and applies the Law of Attraction principles taught there through fun activities. A tool inside the app regularly sends you fictional checks to spend in any way you desire. The checks progressively go up in amounts and as you start to receive checks as high as $100,000, you really start to get out of the box and expand your thinking about money. Expanding into new ways to spend your fictional money - in ways that you previously didn't allow yourself out of scarcity - is the genius of the app to shift your money mindset toward abundance. There is a one time fee of $4.99 to buy the app and it's highly worth it. I can't recommend this app enough for the fun factor and its effectiveness.

A daily practice you can begin right now to shift toward financial freedom

If you're inspired by what you've read so far, take your very first step right now toward your dream career path and speak an affirmation that tells God (the universe) that you are open to a mindset shift around money. As discussed earlier, you can earn as much money as you believe you can. Try this: "I am open to receive resources to fulfill my dreams with ease." This affirmation offers you a chance to begin to embody all that you've learned here today to create greater possibilities around money for your future.
