When you're sad at the holidays or work, do this

December 25, 2018

If you're feeling loss this holiday season or anytime in your career when you need to put your game face on, try this: Turn your grief into gratitude.

Put another way, bring your attention to counting your blessings instead of all the reasons to feel sad. Whatever is gone you are no doubt missing, so the first step is to take a few moments to feel your grief. Don't bypass it. Science says that difficult emotions need only 90 seconds to pass through us physically.

Next, get to the gratitude. You do this by opening your heart to feel the gifts of the situation where you are feeling the loss, and also in noticing other blessings around you. Here are 3 questions you can use to do this:

1. What blessings did this person or situation bring into my life?

2. What lessons can I take from this loss to be better next time?

3. What else in my life right now am I grateful for?

You cannot feel sadness and gratitude at the same time. They are very different emotions. So as you embrace feelings of gratitude, you do more than put on a good game face, you actually begin transcending (or raising yourself spiritually above) the loss.

May this practice bring you peace and harmony whenever you need re-balancing.
